Settled in 1778 by Victor Francois Phinizy, an Italian entrepreneur, this beautiful wetland area has a long history. He saw this unique territory as a great business opportunity and an attractive place to live. Over time, the area took on different roles, including cattle pastures and farming fields. In 1973 the city of Augusta acquired the land for use as a tertiary treatment stage for the nearby water treatment plant. Eventually, the Phinizy Center for Water Sciences was established, conducting research in watershed management and river basin ecology and focusing on impacts to the Savannah River and tributaries. The silos are all that remain of the Phinizy farmstead. Now everyone can enjoy this beautiful and historic place. Check out the visitor center and take home something to remember your visit. Spent two hours at Phinizy Swamp and saw some wonderful birds: herons, cormorants, ring billed gulls, scaup and ring necked ducks, egrets, and a lone white ibis. The trails around the “cells” (aka large ponds) were wide and provided excellent views and photo ops. However, the park is presumably suffering from a lack of funds: boardwalks, bridges, and stairs are a mess with boards rotting or missing. Very dangerous. Lots of tree fall—Hurricane Helene? There was one brand new boardwalk almost finished but no railings for stairs yet. Also signage could be improved—even with park map on the phone, we got lost. It is a wonderful park to see waterfowl but needs some TLC. Read More

My wife went in purposefully armed with very little information. It was a fairly chilly winter day for South Georgia. We walked our self-chosen meandering path that last more than 4.5 miles. We saw many beautiful bird species. The highlight of the day had to be the two huge gators we encountered. There they were sunning themselves… 4 feet (or less) from us. Read More

I dont take pictures of all the birds but I usually do of the gators and I saw 8 the last time I was here which was 12/27/25 Read More

Visited on a cool, fall day and had a great 70 minute walk. Nice boardwalk portions of the trail; the grassy and gravel trails were also great. Saw some waterfowl, but no Gator sightings. There are many scenes of Spanish moss covered trees and bullrushes on the water's edge. We saw many people of all ages enjoying the scenery as well. If you are looking for a place to spend some leisurely walks with scenery, this should be on your list to visit. Dog friendly and some bicycling is available. Read More

An excellent nature park and loop trail. Be aware that at 1/25/26 the Green Trail was closed indefinitely. If you're a birder there's a lot to see. If you just want to get some miles in on a stable base, you can do that too. Just be careful - there are a few boards on crosswalks where you could accidentally step in and break an ankle. From what I saw they're actively working to correct those boardwalk defects, but one was so bad that the board pivoted and hit one of my hikers. We tagged it with caution tape. Overall, great hike and beautiful scenery. Read More
